Getnick Law Managing Partner Neil Getnick Union Agreement Negotiation Featured at Southern Christian Leadership Conference Annual Labor & Community Awards Luncheon
Getnick Law Managing Partner Neil Getnick, in 2022, represented the Chateau Marmont Hotel in labor negotiations that produced a collective bargaining agreement vital to the hotel’s ongoing success. In doing so, Getnick worked with hotel management, union leadership, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (“SCLC”)’s Southern California Chapter President, Pastor D. William Smart Jr.
Getnick’s and the hotel owner Andre Balazs’ longstanding dedication to social justice shaped the negotiations. At the first meeting, Getnick emphasized that the hotel was not here to tolerate, or even accept the workers and their union-supported efforts, but to embrace them. Two months later, the parties had agreed upon the shape of the bargaining unit, and, four months after that, they signed a collective bargaining agreement.
On April 15, 2023, the SCLC, Southern California Chapter featured the negotiated resolution at its Annual Labor & Community Awards Luncheon as an example of a business and community coming together to create change. In doing so, the organization debuted a video featuring Getnick, Pastor Smart, and UNITE HERE! Local 11 Union Leader Kurt Petersen.
Pastor D. William Smart Jr., SCLC Southern California’s President said that the agreement demonstrated “what can happen in America when we begin to talk to each other, sit down, and realize the principles of Dr. Martin Luther King.”
