Partner Margaret J. Finerty Provides Insight on First Indictment under COVID-19 Deceptive Practices Law

All News May 4, 2021

Partner Margaret J. Finerty provided expert analysis in a recent Verywell Health article highlighting the first person to be charged under a new federal law that protects Americans from fraudulent COVID-19 claims. The law at issue – the COVID-19 Consumer Protection Act – makes it unlawful to engage in deceptive acts or practices associated with the treatment, cure, prevention, and diagnosis of COVD-19. “The laws under which [the defendant] is being charged really are aimed at protecting consumers,” Finerty said. She continued that the indictment is “a warning to people out there in the marketplace that you can’t go around saying that your products will cure people of COVID-19 or prevent them from getting COVID-19.”
